Here are the best places to catch a stunning sunset in Ottawa. The capital still has some of my favourite in the world because of its vibrant colours and incredible landscape. From by the water to incredible lookouts, there’s no shortage of wonderful views for sunset in the capital. How many can you cross off this summer?
Chances of a Good Sunset in Ottawa Tonight
I use the website below to see if it will be a good sunset. Usually anything around 40-60% is a good sunset. Clouds in the sky can also be a good indicator but they need to be dispersed, too many will block the sunset but just enough will turn the sky into cotton candy!
Kiweki Point
This newly redevelped location has transfomed one of Ottawa’s most spectacular lookouts into a stunning park that rivals beautiful sunset locations abroad! This popular lookout has had a total glow up! Over the years it was one of my favourite photo locations and I’m so happy to see it back and even better! Grab some small bites in Byward Market and enjoy them during golden hour here.
Dow’s Lake
Enjoy sunset in Ottawa at the red chairs along the bike path for a stunning view of Dow’s Lake and the Arboretum behind it. You can also enjoy sunset from the patio of the restaurants at Dow’s Lake pavilion. Want to enjoy the sunset in Ottawa on the water? Rent a canoe, kayak or paddle board from Dow’s Lake Pavillion.
Rideau Canal
Wherever you are along the Rideau Canal, you’ll see a stunning sunset in Ottawa. My favourite spot is at the Somerset Bridge, where people leave love locks. Plan it as a cute date night and leave your own lock 😉
Enjoy sunset on the Rideau Canal by taking your kayak or canoe rental from Dow’s Lake towards Parliament. Own one yourself? There are multiple entry points along the canal.
Arboretum
Enjoy a sunset across from Dow’s Lake in the Arboretum. Have a picnic here for sunset in Ottawa. To me, this is Ottawa’s equivalent to NYC’s central park. The Arboretum leads to so many neighbourhoods and there’s stunning views wherever you are. There’s beautiful willow trees and in the spring you’ll find blossoms. You’ll also get a stunning view of the whole arboretum from the NCC Scenic Driveway (there’s also limited parking).
Parliament Hill
Walk-behind Parliament and you’ll find the Summer Pavilion. Bring a snack, take a seat, and enjoy the view of the Ottawa River for sunset in Ottawa. Walk further and you’ll reach stairs that will lead you to the Ottawa River Pathway and you can walk to the Ottawa Locks.

Ottawa Locks
This is my favourite spot to catch sunset in Ottawa. I’ve seen sunsets all over the world and this is still one of my favourite spots. You’ll see vibrant colours dance along the water as the sun goes down. You’ll have the sound of water moving through the locks as your soundtrack and a beautiful view of the Gatineau side and Alexandra Bridge. For the best seat in town, find the red Parks Canada chairs.
Canadian History Museum
Cross the Alexandra Bridge to catch sunset in Ottawa at the Canadian History Museum. You’ll get a beautiful view of the bridge, Ottawa locks and Parliament. Pack a picnic to enjoy while the sun goes down.
Chaudiere Falls
Enjoy sunset and a waterfall at the same time at Chaudiere Falls. There’s a beautiful park with plenty of spots to enjoy the view. You’ll instantly feel at peace, soaking in the view and the sounds of the water rushing.
NCC River House
The NCC River House is a beautiful spot to watch sunset in Ottawa. Nestled along the river, it has plenty of lounge chairs and also has a restaurant. You can also rent kayaks beside it if you want to head out on the water.
Bate Island
Enjoy sunset in Ottawa at Bate Island. The last sunset I caught here turned the whole sky pink. Grab a spot at one of the picnic tables and enjoy the view of Ottawa’s skyline. There’s lots of parking here too. Now you’ll also find Tavern on the Island, a lounge vibes patio with burgers, drinks, games and comfortable seating and fire tables to enjoy the views.
Byward Market Rooftop Sunsets
Enjoy a cocktail and a view at Andaz Ottawa’s rooftop bar, Copper and Spirits. The bar is on their 16th floor so you’ll get a panoramic view of downtown Ottawa. They also have fire pits for chilly nights.
Head to Yow (York on William) for more rooftop sunset views. This is the perfect spot to enjoy an aperol spritz mixed with some sunshine.
Rideau Falls
Another sunset and waterfall pairing. Enjoy stunning views of the Ottawa River at this sunset spot in Ottawa. I recommend going to Tavern on the Falls where you can lounge with a drink, bites and views! This might be one of my favourites of the Tavern series in the city!
NAC Rooftop
I feel like this sunset spot in Ottawa is still a lesser known gem! Enjoy incredible views of downtown and the Rideau Canal from the NAC rooftop. You can see some of the views in the reel below. In the summer, the NAC hosts free concerts on the rooftop.
It can be a bit tricky to get to. I find the easiest way is through the steps off Elgin or on Mackenzie King Bridge. Keep following them up and you’ll make it to the rooftop.
Major’s Hill Park
Rays of sunshine will stream through the park as the sun goes down. Enjoy a picnic or sit on the patio at Tavern on the Falls. This is one of my favourite spots for sunset in Ottawa, the view never disappoints. From here you can easily make it to other spots for sunset in Ottawa like the locks or Canadian History Museum.
Beaches
Enjoy sunset in Ottawa by the water at one of these beaches:
- West End: Britannia Beach (this beach is closed for 2021)
- Westboro: Westboro Beach
- Orleans: Petrie Island

Andrew Haydon Park
If you’re in the West End, enjoy sunset in Ottawa at Andrew Haydon Park. You’ll get a beautiful view of the Ottawa River. Pack a picnic to enjoy here.
Remic Rapids
Enjoy sunset in Ottawa at the Remic Rapids. You can access them from the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway and there is parking available if needed. Here you’ll find John Felice Ceprano’s rock art that changes yearly.
Deschênes Rapids Park
Enjoy a view of the Deschênes Rapids at sunset in Ottawa. I remember seeing tons of birds out on the water when I went for sunset a few summers ago. It’s a peaceful spot to watch the sun go down.
Shirley’s Bay
Shirley’s Bay is a 4km loop that will take you to the Ottawa River shoreline, perfect for sunset in Ottawa. Bring your dog to enjoy sunset with you (they have to be on their leash).
Sunsets In Ottawa Worth The Drive
Aylmer Marina
Watch the sun go down behind the boats at the Aylmer Marina. You can sit along the path or grab a spot at the beach.
Gatineau Park
Champlain Lookout, Pink Lake, and Meech Lake are three spots I would recommend catching sunset in Gatineau Park. These are the easiest lookouts to leave once it gets too dark…I don’t know about you but I don’t want to be hiking in the dark.
Eagles Nest Lookout
Choose the easy hike route and you’ll be at the top in 20 minutes. Eagles Nest Lookout has an incredible view of the Madawaska Highlands. Read my guide to Eagles Nest Lookout before going.
Fitz Roy Harbour
Head to Morrison Creek Conservation Area for a stunning sunset in Fitz Roy Harbour. Enjoy the trails while you’re there.
