Magical Stay in a Lighthouse in Canada: Guide to Westpoint Lighthouse PEI

Westpoint Lighthouse Prince Edward Island

Staying at Westpoint Lighthouse was one of the highlights of our PEI trip. It’s a unique experience you can have in Canada, and I would recommend it for your trip. I stumbled upon Westpoint Lighthouse and added it to my Canadian bucket list. Not only can you stay in unique accommodation, but you can enjoy the best spot for sunset on the island. Here are all the details to make it happen.

Where Is Westpoint Lighthouse Inn & Museum?

You’ll find the Westpoint Lighthouse Inn & Museum on the west side of Prince Edward Island. You’ll find it inside Cedar Dunes Provincial Park. It’s a quiet part of Prince Edward Island, and you feel a little more off the beaten path, even though it is a popular spot to visit. Most people opt for the other drives, but I recommend adding this lighthouse to your itinerary. We stayed here when we were doing the North Points Coastal Drive. You can stay here and then drive back to central Prince Edward Island or continue north for the coastal drive.

When is Westpoint Lighthouse Open?

Westpoint Lighthouse Inn & Museum is open yearly from the beginning of June to the end of September.

How Many Nights Should You Book Here

I recommend staying one night at this lighthouse. You can continue your trip along the North Points Coastal Drive or back East.

History of the Lighthouse

Westpoint Lighthouse is PEI’s tallest lighthouse at 67 feet 8 inches. The lighthouse was constructed in 1875 and put into operation in 1876. It got a second life in 1987 as a museum, inn and restaurant.

Today it’s still a working lighthouse, and the lantern operates electrically. A museum on site shares artifacts, stories of the community, the light keepers and more. The museum is included in your stay and $6 for visitors.

Climb To The Top Of The Lighthouse

Climb 72 stairs to enjoy the view from the Lantern Deck. It’s a working lighthouse, so it got pretty toasty at the top, and we couldn’t stay long, but it was such a fantastic sight to see. As you walk up, you’ll be able to read about the lighthouse’s history.

Accommodation in the Lighthouse

The museum spirals up the lighthouse, and the accommodation is attached to the side. There are a few rooms at Westpoint Lighthouse Inn. They’re spacious and lead out to the back, where you can enjoy ocean views and catch incredible sunsets.

Enjoy The Best Spot for Sunset in PEI

All the guests gather with drinks around the bonfire at night and watch a vibrant sunset along the water. Since the lighthouse is on the west, you’ll experience the best sunset on the island. I was already so excited to stay in a lighthouse, but this was the cherry on top. It was the perfect opportunity to slow down and be in the moment. We experienced a magical golden hour followed by a vibrant sunset. This has to be the best place on the island for sunset.

We grabbed a lobster roll at a local restaurant to enjoy the sunset. I can never get enough lobster rolls in PEI. The hotel can recommend which restaurants to visit and if there is local music that night.

Can You Spot The Phantom Ship?

There are stories of a phantom ship that can be seen far off in the ocean. There are quite a few tales of people going to find it. We didn’t see any phantom ships while we were staying 😉
